Short Bio
  • Nadine Darwiche is a Professor at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon in the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Her research is focused on pre-clinical and translational cancer research. Her research centers on cancer prevention and targeted cancer therapy using retinoids and on the characterization of anticancer inhibitors of DNA polymerases. She is interested in drug development from medicinal plants and drug formulations using nanoparticles. Her research also focusses on the sesquiterpene lactones family of plant secondary metabolites which comprises lead anticancer drugs in clinical development. Her research relies on in vitro and in vivo models of epidermal carcinogenesis, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma, and chronic myeloid and acute myeloid leukemia to determine the effect of anticancer drugs in: - Cell death mechanisms - Retinoid signaling and mechanisms of resistance - DNA damage and DNA polymerase inhibitors - Targeted cancer therapy and combination treatments - Targeting of cancer stem cells - Epigenetic mechanisms - Cancer metabolism and inflammation - Nanoparticle drug development She has been teaching cancer, biochemistry, and genetics-related courses and has advised fifty MS and seven PhD students, and two post-doctoral fellows. She is an active member of the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Lebanese Association for the Advancement of Science, and an ambassador and a member for the European Association for Cancer Research. She is an editorial board member of several journals and has reviewed extensively for cancer and biomedical and Biological sciences-related journals. She has received several local and international awards.
