  • Fernando Mendes (FM), is working as a Coordinator Professor at the Biomedical Laboratory Sciences Scientific-Pedagogical Unit at Polytechnic University of Coimbra and is an effective member of the Health & Technology Research Center (H&TRC) research center. Being also a researcher collaborator Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB) at the University of Coimbra. He finished his PhD in Medical Sciences in 2016 at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra. For the past years, FM is a member of a multidisciplinary team whose domain includes Oncology and Biophysics. He has published 34 full-text papers, 4 books and 6 book chapters, more than 20 abstracts in periodic journals, more than 120 abstracts in conference proceedings, and 45 communications by invitation. He is a co-author of more than 200 posters in international scientific meetings. He was a supervisor of more than 60 bachelor’s degree students, 6 master’s thesis and 5 research projects in innovation and entrepreneurship, e is currently the supervisor of 2 PhD thesis. FM has 3 patents and more than 10 provisory patents submitted between Portugal and Brazil. In collaboration with Brazil, as an invited researcher, has more than 20 financed research projects. In recent years he has given higher priority to the study of topics related to cancer treatment, namely using radiotherapy and immunotherapy. One of the subtopics that he has been studying aims to better understand the role of the immune system and the Immune checkpoint inhibitors in cancer treatment, in prostate, bladder and penile cancer among other cancers, which may contribute to increasing patients' life expectancy. He was also the Guest-Editor issue "European Journal of Public Health" in 2021, Cancers in two topic numbers Special Issue "Innovative Treatment Strategies for Lung Cancer and Radiotherapy" and Special Issue "Thoracic Neuroendocrine Tumors and the Role of Emerging Therapies", Nutrients Special Issue "Nutritional Status and Interventions for Patients with Cancer" and "Nutritional Status and Interventions for Patients with Cancer 2nd Edition" and Biomedicines Special Issue "Tumor Microenvironment: New Challenges and Opportunities". Has been a reviewer of several journals, having reviewed more than 160 manuscripts. Has also been awarded 10 prizes and distinctions.
