Roles of lipid droplet in chronic disease

Lead Editor:
    Professor Daniela Carlisi Univerity Italy

Lipid droplets (LDs) are intracellular organelles used by cells as an energy reserve but are now recognized for their more important roles in the development and progression of various chronic pathologies, such as tumors, metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases. LDs are mainly present in adipose tissue, but can also be found in other tissue districts, where their growth is induced by various stimuli including growth factors, long-chain unsaturated fatty acids, oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokines. However, very little is still known about the mechanisms that regulate biogenesis and the other roles of LDs. The aim of this Special Issue is to collect original articles or reviews concerning the role of LDs in chronic diseases such as cancer, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and neurodegenerative diseases (eg Parkinson's), and how the treatment with specific compounds can improve the pathological conditions, by modulating the LDs content.
